JOCY DE OLIVEIRA Composer, pianist, author, intermedia artist. Born in Brazil, divides her artistic activity among her native country, the USA and Europe ARTISTIC EDUCATION: "Master of Arts" from Washington University, St. Louis, USA. Master Classes in piano with Marguerite Long in Paris.

VIDEOS: A complete (1 h.30') video recordings of her operas "Fata Morgana", "Space Liturgy" , "Inori to the sacred prostitute"  and "As Malibrans" for National Public Television (TVE) in Brazil. These videos were conceived and directed by the author. A complete video recording of her music-theater piece "Illud Tempus" for TV Cultura, S. Paulo, Brazil. Among some of her shorter videos, "Raga no Amazonas" received an international award at the Festival Musica Contaminata, Como, Italy.

MAJOR WORKS: Composed, wrote the scenario and directed 6 music- theater works or operas: a trilogy : "Inori à prostituta sagrada" (1993) commissioned by VITAE Foundation presented at Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil, Rio de Janeiro (16 performances), "Illud Tempus" commissioned and presented by Rioarte Foundation, with 20 performances in Rio de Janeiro, and Haus der Kulturen der Welt, Berlin. This work received an award by "Ministerio da Cultura" and was also selected by the major newspaper "O Globo",Rio, among the best music events of 1994. The third part "As Malibrans"   commissioned by the town of  Rio de Janeiro  and StaatsTheater Darmstadt    premiered in 2000 at  the StaatsTheater, Darmstadt , Germany followed by Teatro Carlos Gomes Rio de Janeiro.  Besides this trilogy, her operas "Fata Morgana" (1987 new version 1996) was acclaimed by public and reviews in the Museum of Modern Art, Rio and Teatro Municipal de S. Paulo. "Space Liturgy" (1988) presented open air, in Rio, for a crowd of 15.000. "Music in Space" (1983) presented several times in the Hayden Planetarium, New York, Planetariums of Miami, Rio and S.Paulo.

WORLD PREMIERES, WORKS DEDICATED TO HER: The following composers dedicated works to her as a pianist: Luciano Berio, Iannis Xenakis, Claudio Santoro, John Cage, Ben Johnston, Lejaren Hiller, Robert Wykes, Marlos Nobre, Manoel Enriquez.

ARTISTIC ACTIVITIES: Organised in Rio de Janeiro and S. Paulo the First Week for Avant Garde Music (1961) This was the first time electronic music was presented in Brazil. Organised the Second Week of Avant Garde Music in Rio and S. Paulo (1966) . She invited and organised concerts in Rio for the following musicians: John Cage, Stockhausen, Ron Pellegrino, Joseph Celli, Henry Pousseur, Iannis Xenakis, David Tudor, Phill Niblock, Rich O'Donnell among others. She also organised a video show with participation of 100 American artists in the Museum of Modern Art, Rio. She was a pioneer to present in Brazil concerts with electronic music, multimedia, laser and video computer in real time. She organised a series of Women Composers, Rio de Janeiro. Founder of the "Academia Paulista de Musica", "Ensemble Ars Electronica", "Ensemble Jocy de Oliveira" (group of musicians/actors to perform her music). She was music curator at the Museum of Modern Art, Rio and Foundation of Theaters in Rio (FUNARJ) She was member of the organising comity for the New Music America, Bienal de Musica Contemporanea and is member of the executive board of "Sociedade Brasileira de Musica Eletroacustica."

ACADEMIC WORK: She was associated professor: University of South Florida, Tampa, faculty member: New School for Social Research, artist in residence: St. John's College, St. F´, Lewis and Clark, Portland, Universidades Federal da Bahia, Festival Campos de Jordaõ. Workshops: Hochschule fur Muzik Berlin and Mannheim, New York University, Washington University, Escola Nacional de Musica, Rio besides several festivals and symposiums in Brazil.
